CLOC Announces Updates To Its Core 12 Functions Of Legal Operations

SAN JOSE, CA, April 7, 2020 — The Corporate Legal Operations Consortium (CLOC) today announced updates to the CLOC Core 12 — the company’s flagship reference model for legal operations optimization.

Due to the ever-evolving, and growing role of legal operations, CLOC has updated its original CLOC Core Competencies to reflect the increased scope and priorities that today’s legal operations professionals are responsible for. The CLOC Core 12 defines the functional areas that most legal department operations teams oversee. These functions are critical in enabling the organization to think differently about ways to deliver business impact. The CLOC Core 12 can be utilized to mature a legal organization’s growth in specific functional areas depending on priorities, objectives, opportunities, and resources.

“The latest version of CLOC CORE 12 continues to push the industry forward, placing legal operations at the center of the legal ecosystem,” said Mary O’Carroll, CLOC President and Director of Legal Operations at Google. “CLOC’s original framework for legal operations was well suited for the emerging days of the role. The updated changes to the functional areas reflect the broadened set of responsibilities that allow us to further optimize at scale and reflect today’s modern legal department.”

The latest enhancements to CLOC’s CORE 12 functional areas include:

“Corporations continue to put additional demands on their legal departments to increase the value they bring to the table” said Christine Coats, VP of Legal Operations at Oracle and CLOC Board Member. “Utilizing a framework like The CLOC Core 12 enables legal departments to prioritize areas to optimize and mature their departments in a systematic and data-driven manner in order to meet corporate goals.”
