CLOC Wraps its 2024 Global Institute: Recharging Legal Operations and Strengthening Community Connections
Las Vegas, Nevada, May 9, 2024: The Corporate Legal Operations Consortium (CLOC) concluded its annual CLOC Global Institute (CGI) at the ARIA Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. This year’s event, themed “Recharge: Embracing Experimentation in Legal Ops,” introduced Legal Ops 3.0, a shift toward innovative technologies, strategic use of data, and transformative leadership in the legal sector.
CLOC President Jenn McCarron unveiled the concept of Legal Ops 3.0 in her opening address. “Legal Ops 3.0 challenges us to expand our capabilities, leveraging advanced tools and AI to redefine service delivery and success in operations. This new phase encourages us to transition from tactical problem solvers to strategic wayfinders, with data serving as the cornerstone of our strategies,” said McCarron.
Following McCarron’s remarks, Cassandra Worthy, a renowned change enthusiast and innovation expert delivered the opening keynote, energizing the audience with her engaging talk on leveraging change as a catalyst for growth. The event concluded with a forward-looking keynote from Andrew Perlman, Dean of Sufolk University Law School and a leading authority on law and AI.
CLOC’s annual meeting highlighted the contributions of community groups, including the newly established groups in Spain and Brazil, as well as the Core 12 functional groups. CLOC Vice President Farrah Pepper expressed heartfelt gratitude to the various committees and councils for their dedication and ongoing efforts. In the same session, Pepper announced a significant collaboration with Harbor on the 2024 Law Department Benchmarking Survey. This initiative will merge CLOC’s insights with Harbor’s longstanding expertise, aiming to provide legal operations professionals with comprehensive and detailed data.
This year’s CGI, which ran from May 5-9, attracted more than 2,300 registrants from 25 countries, underscoring the global nature of the event and CLOC’s influence across the legal industry. The program included a record 95 educational sessions, divided into six carefully curated tracks. The sessions were selected by CLOC’s Education Advisory Council from more than 350 submissions. The council worked closely with speakers to refine each presentation, ensuring that every session was tailored to the specific interests and career stages of attendees. Notably, more than 60% of the sessions were led by legal ops professionals, guaranteeing practical takeaways and direct applicability to the attendees’ daily work.
The CGI Exhibit Hall, with 113 exhibitors, offered attendees a place to discover new technologies, try them out firsthand, and build important professional relationships. Across the hall, and following its popular introduction last year, CLOC expanded the Braindate initiative which facilitated targeted discussions among attendees on shared topics of interest. ‘CLOC Talk Live’ also provided a platform for engaging, short-form discussions, featuring a variety of voices from the legal ops community to explore current challenges and innovations – all in front of a live audience.
A new initiative, CLOC Cares, spearheaded by the CLOC DEIB Council saw 75 attendees participate in a service project with the Three Square Food Bank, emphasizing CLOC’s commitment to community service and the values of contribution and service that define the consortium.
“The energy and engagement at this year’s CLOC Global Institute were unparalleled,” said Lisa Konie, CLOC’s Interim Executive Director. “As someone who has been a part of this organization since its inception, it never ceases to amaze me how committed this community is to helping each other, sharing information and pushing our industry forward. I look forward to continuing the momentum in Sydney and London later this year.”
