CLOC Member Resources
This list of definitions is intended as a guide to better understand your membership and general CLOC terminology.
Legal Operations: The function within a legal department that focuses on improving efficiency, managing costs, and optimizing the delivery of legal services through financial management, technology, process improvement, and strategic planning.
Member: A “member” refers to an individual or organization that has joined CLOC—by completing an application process and paying membership dues. Members gain access to specific benefits and resources including networking opportunities, educational resources, industry insights and exclusive events.

Legal Operations Professional: Professionals whose primary function is to provide legal operations support directly to their employer.
Legal Solutions Professional: Professionals whose primary function is to support, retain, or attract clients through business development, sales, marketing, technology services, legal services, consultancy for legal functions, or whose primary function is outside internal legal operations.
Student Members: Full-time university undergraduate or graduate program students, who not currently employed can join CLOC for $25/yr.
Renew: The process by which an existing member continues their membership for another year after their current membership period expires. Involves paying annual dues again and updating contact and/or professional details (if necessary).
Rejoin: The process by which a former member which membership lapsed or was terminated decides to rejoin the association after a period of absence.
Grace Period: A set period after the membership expiration where a member can still renew their membership without losing benefits or continuity of status. CLOC currently offers a 30-day grace period for individual members and a 60-day grace period for group memberships.
Active Member: A member who is currently in good standing, having paid dues and fulfilled any membership requirements and who has access to all the benefits of membership.
Inactive member: A person whose membership has lapsed, typically due to non-payment, and they no longer have access to member benefits.
Prospective member: An individual or organization that has expressed interest in joining but has not yet completed the membership application or paid dues.
