Definition of terms

Diversity

Diversity encompasses the variety of backgrounds, identities (both innate and chosen), experiences, beliefs, values, skills, and perspectives among a group of people. These differences enhance and strengthen our community.

Equity

Equity focuses on systemic change to ensure everyone receives fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement, regardless of their identities or circumstances. It identifies and removes barriers that have historically hindered some from full participation. To achieve equity, we must recognize inequalities and address varied needs, ensuring everyone has the tools and resources to thrive.

Inclusion

Inclusion entails implementing philosophies, policies, and practices that ensure every individual’s voice is heard, valued, and given equal opportunity. It fosters a welcoming environment for all.

Belonging

Belonging creates a culture where individuals of diverse identities and views feel physically, psychologically, and emotionally safe. It ensures they’re heard, respected, and can thrive as their genuine selves. True belonging is the outcome of effective inclusion.
