How it works

Choose one of the 12 legal operations competency areas you want to evaluate. You can return to assess additional modules at any time.
3. Answer guided questions
Work through a structured set of questions reflecting your current capabilities and practices. The questions are designed to meet you where you are and do not require preparation.
4. Review your results
Receive a maturity score and a clear breakdown of where your function sits across four stages: Reactive, Emerging, Developing, and Leading. Your report highlights both strengths and priority areas for growth.
5. Take action
Use your results to prioritize focus areas, build a roadmap, and access curated CLOC resources that will help you advance your function.
About the CLOC Compass
The CLOC Compass is the digital companion to the Core 12 Maturity Assessment Playbook, a resource developed by CLOC’s Legal Department Maturity Assessment (LDMAP) Committee. Both the Playbook and the Compass grew out of a question that CLOC members consistently raised: How do we know how we’re doing, and what does “better” actually look like for our function?
The LDMAP Committee is made up of legal operations leaders from across the CLOC community to answer that question systematically. The result is a framework built around four maturity stages: Reactive, Emerging, Developing, and Leading. They are mapped across each of the CLOC Core 12 competency areas.
Built with our partner Neota Logic, the CLOC Compass takes that framework and makes it interactive. Whether your legal operations function is a large department, a small dedicated team, or a single person responsible for a broad portfolio, the Compass gives you a structured, practical way to benchmark where you are and prioritize where to go next.

Yes. The CLOC Compass is fully ready for complete assessments across the CLOC Core 12. The beta designation means we’re also in an active feedback period. As members use the application, your input will help inform additional features and enhancements we’re planning to introduce. The CLOC Compass will continue to grow.
During the beta period, the CLOC Compass uses its own login. We’re working to integrate the Compass into CLOC’s single sign-on, so in the future you’ll be able to access it seamlessly with the same credentials you use across the CLOC platform. We’ll let members know when that’s available.
The CLOC Core 12 is CLOC’s framework for legal operations excellence, defining twelve key functional areas that guide and support high-performing legal operations functions. The twelve areas are: Business Intelligence, Financial Management, Firm & Vendor Management, Information Governance, Knowledge Management, Organization Optimization & Health, Practice Operations, Project/Program Management, Service Delivery Models, Strategic Planning, Technology, and Training & Development.
The framework measures maturity across four stages: Reactive, Emerging, Developing, and Leading. Each stage reflects a different level of capability and process sophistication within a given competency area.
Each Core 12 module assessment is designed to be completed in a single focused session that will take between 5 to 10 minutes to complete.
Yes. You can return to the CLOC Compass to assess additional Core 12 modules at any time.
Your responses are private to you. CLOC can access the data to support the program, but it is not shared at the individual or company level. We use anonymized, aggregated data across participants to generate benchmarks and insights. No personally identifiable information is disclosed.

The CLOC Compass is the interactive application that brings that framework to life, guiding you through a structured self-assessment and generating a personalized results report.
